Let it Flow

Materials Needed Include:

Drop cloth, rectangular pan, gloves, rags, canvas or wood, acrylic paint, pouring medium (Floetrol), silicone oil, plastic cup, and strainer.

Goals Are:

1. Express feelings connected with the loss.

2. Resolve feelings of guilt, depression, or anger associated with loss and return to the previous level of functioning.

Directives:

1. Start by prepping and putting out plastic drop cloth.

2. Prepare to pour recipe with 2-parts Floetrol and 1-part acrylic paint. Consistency may need to be thinned and water may be used. Floetrol may need strained if lumpy.

3. Let the client pick colors and when you mix the paint, be sure to stir and let sit for 30 mixtures.

4. During this wait time, the client and therapist can discuss how fluid art can connect to emotions and promote healing. We can also discuss any emotions that came up throughout the week.

5. After paints are mixed put 2 or 3 drops of silicone oils in the mixture.

6. Then start filling a plastic cup with color and layer them (2 or 3 colors).

7. Then flip the cup on the canvas and add some paint around the cup and wait for colors to sink to the bottom.

8. Then lift the cup, and if the canvas is not completely filled client may move the canvas to fill. Make sure it is level, so no further movement occurs.

9. This may take a couple of days to dry so instruct the client to clean the area.

Adaptations & Safety: The client might struggle at mixing paints, so the therapist may be prepared by having some colors already mixed to prevent waiting for the client or frustration in mixing. The therapist needs to be aware of the use of non-toxic supplies when using paints, Floetrol, and silicone oil. Extra supervision may be implemented and making sure supplies closed and away right after use and properly stored.
